A Weekend of London Life

What better way to enjoy a weekend than to spend it in the Capital with the family. I was 14 before I had the chance to visit London for the first time and it was with my best friend whose dad was running in the London marathon. Not onIy did I get to visit the sights, I also witnessed the atmosphere from the crowds of people gathered along the miles of pavements. It was an experience I still remember and I have been back countless times since. As a family we are trying to make the effort to visit the City every year. However, the two times we have been to London with the boys have both been spur of the moment flying visits. We first went in June 2012 with Harry, then 6 months, and had only decided the day before to head down for the Queen’s Jubilee. As well as seeing The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, we managed to take in the sights of the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and popped into Harrods too. Not at all child friendly but he seemed to enjoy the crowds of people who had gathered for the occasion.

We then visited in November last year, again on the spur of the moment, as I really wanted to see the Tower of London Poppy display. This was the first time that we had been as a family of four with our latest addition Jack, 5 months, on board. We tried to make this trip as child friendly as possible, starting with getting the train. We decided to stay overnight so we could try to visit as many places as possible, but as always when in London we ran out of time and didn’t get through our to do list. On a side note we found travelling in London with the double buggy a logistical nightmare! The lack of lifts on the Tube and in the stations was laughable (…eventually!), but despite the work out for Mummy and Daddy, Harry & Jack had a great time! Harry loved every minute of the trip and still talks about getting the choo choo to London, seeing Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. He still sings and remembers all the words and verses to London Bridge too!

We would love to revisit London together again and what better way to enjoy the sights than to win this competition with Tots 100 to stay in the Royal Garden Hotel. This would be the perfect location for us as a visit to the Natural History Museum to see ‘Dippy’ before he retires is at the top of our list. A visit to London Zoo would also follow closely behind. However, if we were to win I think we would take it a little easier this time round and go at a child friendly pace. We would love to make a visit to Kensington Gardens where we could enjoy the outdoor space and let the little ones stretch their legs, perhaps enjoying a picnic too, and hiring children’s bikes from the hotel would certainly be a highlight! One thing for sure is that we would certainly avoid getting the Tube on our next visit. If only we’d checked out the hotel’s website for advice for parents travelling to London before our last visit, it would have made our lives a little easier. It is well worth a read if you are also planning a trip to London soon, click here for more details. I think next time we will take the open top bus! 🙂
